Weddings are very special events. Every bride and groom will want something different for their big day, in fact for some people it’s a small day. What is the same though is that a wedding is a ceremony is the union of two people and that couple is in love. In pretty much all wedding ceremonies there is an exchange of wedding vows between the couple. There is also more often than not an exchange of a gift in some way or another. In Western tradition this gift is usually a ring. Before the wedding the groom or even the bride would have proposed to their partner and presented them with a gift then. This is typically an engagement ring, which you can get from places like Chic Jewelry or from any jeweler. The gift is sometimes money or even occasionally flowers. The use of the ring has been part of ceremonies for a very long time although no one is entirely clear why and it wasn’t until the early 20th century that men started to wear them too.
You may not be aware but the wedding that is still most common in the Western world is known as a white wedding. For this the bride traditionally wears a white wedding dress and a veil. It was Queen Victoria who first popularised this look, which may be surprising to some of you as she is not your typical style icon! For Victoria though, wearing the white dress was both a sign of extravagance but also a sign of sexual purity, which was very important to her. These days the white doesn’t necessarily represent sexual purity, however it is unusual that it is worn by anyone other than first time brides. But as we said before your wedding is what you want it to be, you make the rules, it is after all your special day!
